The Columbus Blue Jackets head to San Jose to face the Sharks for the third of four-straight road games. The Jackets lost 3-2 on Tuesday evening to the Los Angeles Kings in overtime, but still haven’t lost a road game in regulation this season. Here are our keys to a CBJ victory tonight:
Don’t Allow Brent Burns to Take Over
Sharks defenseman Brent Burns is tied for the team lead in points, assists and goals for the San Jose Sharks so far this season. In a 3-2 victory over the CBJ just a couple weeks ago, Burns made a major impact on the game with two assists. The Jackets need to make sure Burns doesn’t put on an encore performance this evening in San Jose.
Continue to Dominate on Special Teams
It’s pretty obvious the Blue Jackets have made an improvement on special teams, even with a small sample size of games. The Blue Jackets are currently first in the NHL in power-play percentage (50) and second in penalty-kill percentage (94.1).
The Blue Jackets have impressed cynics, taking three of a possible four points in back-to-back road matchups with the Dallas Stars and Los Angeles Kings. However, they haven’t scored a goal in the first period of either game. The CBJ offense will need to step up if they hope to have a legitimate shot to win in San Jose against a 4-3-0 Sharks squad. A first-period goal would would go a long way when it comes to increasing their odds of getting a W.
