Ohio State wide receiver Parris Campbell remembers still being in high school and watching the Buckeyes play in the 2015 College Football Playoff when they went on to win the national championship.
That team was nine units strong… That’s our goal for this game. Nine units strong.
The phrase is one that puts an emphasis on every unit playing their part for the success of the team as a whole.
Ohio State Head Coach Urban Meyer credited his players for a bulk of the success he’s had when he spoke to the media this morning. However, he made an emphasis that it’s the players having a team mentality that makes this team possibly a championship-caliber one. He talked about his football team saying “We care deeply about team. We push team first”.
Campbell epitomizes a player who’s all about helping out the team. He made an impact on special teams as a freshman with seven tackles and earned some valuable time on the field coming into this season.
This season Campbell has caught a pass (or multiple) in eight of 12 games for the Buckeyes, but has stood out as a kick returner and credits his success on returning kicks to his teammates.
I’m always trusting those guys, those 10 guys that’s blocking for me.
Earlier this week we wrote about five under-the-radar keys to the upcoming game between the Ohio State Buckeyes and Clemson Tigers. One of those was a fourth receiver stepping up for the Buckeyes. Campbell was one of our top nominees.
Campbell wasn’t completely comfortable at first, but didn’t force the issue:
I didn’t have a lot of confidence at first… My mom always tells me in due time. Always be patient.
Now he has the opportunity of a lifetime ahead of him on Saturday evening and feels confident heading into the matchup:
I just feel like anything’s possible right now. I just have to stay sound. Stay focused.
The Buckeyes will need a full-team effort to defeat the Clemson Tigers in the College Football Playoff Semifinal. Parris Campbell will be one of many players for Ohio State who will need to perform at a high level on New Year’s Eve.
