CBJ Continue Playoff Push: Go For First Victory Versus Islanders This Season

The Columbus Blue Jackets (38-27-3) got themselves a big victory at home, defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins by a final score of 4-1 on Saturday night. This week will be quite a challenge for the club, starting tonight out east against the New York Islanders (39-22-7). The puck drop is scheduled for shortly after 7:00 PM ET.

The Columbus Blue Jackets and New York Islanders haven’t been too hot lately. The CBJ are 5-5-0 in their last ten games, while the Islanders have a 4-5-1 record over that same stretch.

It’s the Isles who have the edge in the season series this year, defeating the Jackets 3-2 at home on the first day of December, then shutting out Columbus at Nationwide Arena by a final score of 3-0 on Valentine’s Day. Each team would love nothing more than to find their winning ways once again.

The CBJ went “all in” at the trade deadline. Things are still a little shaky in Columbus, but their aforementioned victory over the Pens feels like it could be a game that’s a catalyst for a playoff run. However, a fan brought up a great point this weekend, saying the game could in fact be “fool’s gold”.

The Islanders situation is interesting as well. The team has completely obliterated expectations, but recently may finally be coming down to earth, becoming more of a mediocre team lacking offensive firepower to win when it counts the most.

Tonight’s game features two teams with fan bases that have been waiting for something special. An Islanders win would give them a bit of a playoff cushion, while a CBJ victory would (as Greg Wyshynski of ESPN put it) prove (at least for one night) that “fortune favors the bold”.

Let’s just drop the puck already.
